Overview
Malnutrition and sarcopenia are very common in older adults, significantly impairing their self-sufficiency, contributing to prolonged hospitalizations, increasd health care costs, risk of institutionalization and mortality of geriatric patients. Complex intervention of malnutrition and sarcopenia by a geriatrician in the context of other geriatric syndromes has a proven benefit for improving the quality of life, functional status and health of older people and reducing health care costs. Clinical guidelines for performing evaluation of nutritional status and sarcopenia were created and approved by the Board of the Czech Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics based on European guidelines and summarize the description and methodology of the procedure, including evaluation and recommended therapy.
