Overview
Anorexia nervosa is a psychosomatic disorder mostly affected adolescent girls and young women in critical age of developing the overall peak bone mass. In view of bone health, the anorexic patients belong to the most vulnerable group among the large adolescent population. Both the adaptive changes of hypothalamic-pituitary system as a response to profound energy deprivation and severe nutritional deficiency significantly contribute to the prominent bone losses. Skeletal changes might present by impaired linear growth of bone, low bone mineral density, as well as structural and micro-architectural changes which contribute to premature osteoporosis and increased risk of fracture. Densitometry examination is indicated in all patients with anorexia nervosa.
