Search for related haematopoietic stem cells donor - coordination of the process and single-center experience

Overview
Stem cells donor search is economically and technically intensive process that is also regulated by means of several significant legal rules. Transplant coordinator and strictly defined operating procedures and forms ensure effectiveness of sibling donor searches and of those organized within registries of voluntary donors and extended family, eventually. Our experience confirms 33% chance of finding HLA-identical sibling donor and 7,1% chance of finding suitable donor within extended family donor search. However, several cases of weak cooperation and even donorship refusals can occur. Results and information concerning related donor availability are usually reachable in the period of approximately two weeks since the start of donor search. Duration of the process of sibling donor search is crucial.
