Overview
Planned home birth is a modern social phenomenon that is based on the false premise that human birth is a physiological process in the course of which there is no need to intervene. Human birth is burdened by many serious risks, which are difficult to predict. Modern obstetrics was created in order to minimize these risks. This paper reviews the results of studies analyzing the safety of births in different conditions (planned home births, births in birth centers, hospital births). Outcome studies are controversial. Recent studies involving a large number of subjects, however, despite all the limitations demonstrate an increased risk of planned home births.
Key words:
home birth – birth center – maternal mortality – perinatal mortality
