Overview
The influence of hormone replacement therapy on age-related eye diseases was investigated in several observation studies. Protective primary preventive role for age-related macular degeneration was shown only in Eye Disease Case-Control Study. Blue Mountain Eye Study and Beaver Dam Study did not find significant associations. Protective role of estrogen is on border of significance for cataracta and intraocular pressure. It is in a common knowledge that sexagens increse the risk of tromboembolism. Also ocular vessels are under this danger.
The different effects of pure estrogens, combination of estrogens and gestagens and tibolone are also influenced by the dose, the way of application and the timing of therapy. The prevention of age related eye diseases surely are not indication for hormone therapy along recent findings. On the other side there is no new containdication in this medical branch.
Key words:
hormone replacement therapy, age-related eye diseases
