Overview

Jacelon Attributed Dignity Scale (JADS) questionnaire helps to understand the perception of dignity from the perspective of older people. The aim of the study was to verify the psychometric properties of the Czech version of this questionnaire. The group consisted of 150 older adults who were hospitalized for at least one week (mean age 77.7 ± 8 years; 104 women [69.3%], length of hospitalization at the time of completing the questionnaire [10.2 ± 5.8 days]). The total value of attributed dignity in the elderly was relatively high (63 ± 5.84). The reliability of the Czech version of JADS was good (á = 0.802). A weak positive correlation was found in JADS with the Attitude to Aging Questionnaire scale (r = 0.288, p = 0.0004) and a weak negative correlation with the Patient Dignity Inventory (r = -0.188, p = 0.021) and Geriatric Depression Scale (r = - 0.206, p = 0.011). Factor analysis resulted in a four-factor solution (Self-value; Perceived value from others; Self in relation to others; Behaviour with respect towards others). The results were compared with published results of psychometric validations of the JADS scale in the USA, Greece and Iran. Our study confirmed that the Czech version of JADS is a valid and reliable tool for measuring attributed dignity in Czech hospitalized older adults.
