The role of nutrition in prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration

Overview
This article deals with the issue of the impact of nutrition on eye health, especially age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness among individuals aged ≥65 years in developed countries. Treatment of AMD is usually invasive and expensive. This high economic burden is one of the reasons why nutrition is considered in prevention and treatment of AMD. Oxidative stress, defined as excess amounts of reactive oxygen species, is the major cause of AMD. So, the balance between antioxidants and reactive oxygen species is essential. Research suggests that the role of antioxidants and other nutrients seem to be significant for reducing the risk of developing AMD.
