Overview
Recently, surgical treatment of fractures has undergone a number of important changes. New types of implants have been developed, primarily locking plates and locked intramedullary nails. The main trend is in the anatomical pre-shaping of these implants, i.e. optimizing their construction whilst respecting the anatomy of the bone for which they are designed. In addition, the surgical technique is optimized in order to protect soft tissues and the bone’s blood supply as much as possible. Surgeons, therefore, frequently use mini-invasive techniques and insert implants through small incisions under the control of a monitor.
However, despite all the progress made, a correct internal bone fixation must always respect the basic biological and biomechanical principles. Implants should help to meet these principles as best as possible and thus they have to adjust to them and not vice versa.
