New developments in the pharmacological management of insomnia

Insomnia is a frequent and serious disruption of health affecting almost a third of the population.Aside of sleep hygiene and cognitive-behavioral therapy modern hypnotics (benzodiazepinesand Z preparations) represent one of the alternatives in the acute treatment of insomnia.Presented is a review of available drugs and recommendations concerning their selection andapplication. In choosing hypnotics we first of all follow the rapidity of onset of their effect,duration of action, side-effects, possible interactions with other pharmaceuticals, influence onthe quality of sleep, as well as the potential of addiction to them.
