Treatment of non-healing wounds at geriatric patiens

Overview
With aging population, chronic diseases that compromise skin integrity such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and impaired mobility are becoming increasingly common. The most common types of chronic ulcers in geriatric patients are venous and arterial ulcers, pressure ulcers and neuropathic ulcers. Treatment of non-healing wounds involves recognising phases of woundhealing, uses the preparation of the wound bed by TIME model and takes into account the present biofilm, wound infection and condition of moisture in the wound. Infections in the wound must be dealt with local or systemic treatment, devitalized tissue must be removed by débridement, if the wound bed is dry, it is necessary to create a moist wound environment. If the wound secretion is strong, it is necessary to choose materials with good absorption capacity. The article focuses on the etiology, assessment and treatment options for the most common non-healing wounds in geriatric patients.
