Overview
The European Commission published two guides on the implementation of Patient Blood Management (PBM) in hospitals in European Union. Considerable scientific evidence indicates that PBM reduces perioperative blood loss and transfusion needs, perioperative morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay, and costs. Preoperative screening, diagnosis, and treatment of anemia are essential. However, many barriers limit the translation of PBM into clinical practice. The series of simple, cost-effective, best-practice, feasible, and evidence-based measures will enable any hospital to reduce both anemia prevalence and anemia-related unnecessary transfusion.
