Overview
An asplenic patient runs the life-long risk of severe infectious complications. Prevention of these complications must be thorough, however in practice it is often insufficient. In this article both the main health-risks for splenectomized patients are outlined as well as the most common causes of infection. The basic non-medical and medical preventive-care measures are emphasised. The aim of this text is to increase general awareness of the health-risks associated with impaired or lost function of the spleen.
Key words:
asplenism, splenectomy, prophylaxis.
