Neurological diseases are a frequent cause of insomnia. It is induced as in all other diseases bypain, immobility, incontinence, treatment, hospitalisation and anxiety which usually areassociated with disease. Moreover, insomnia is a basic symptom of some neurological diseases.Thus insomnia is typically caused by dementia and degenerative cerebral processes. Insomniais usually also associated with narcolepsy, periodic limb movements during sleep, the restlessfeet syndrome, apnoic sleep syndrome and disorders of the circadian rhythm (in particular inthe delayed sleep stage). Less frequent reasons may be various parasomnias, although insomniain these conditions is not marked as a rule. Brief characteristics of selected diseases withinsomnia are presented.
