Overview

Amoxicillin/clavulanate is useful in patients with suspected or documented gram-negative infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing organisms such as H. influenzae and B. catarrhalis. The combination is also effective against E. coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter, 5. epidermidis, 5. aureus (but not methicillin-resistant strains), 5. faecalis, and P. mirabilis, while less effective against Pseudomonas and Enterobacter. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid has been proved effective in therapy of peddaatric infections (otitis media, sinusitis, lower-respiratory and urinary tract infections). Clinical trials showed that amoxicillin/clavulanate administered every 12 hours was as effective and safer than given every 8 hours.
