Overview
The author in this review emphasizes the complex approach to the management of chronic wounds.
Chronic wounds include:
leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, ulcerating malignancies, ulcers after necrosis debridement in the 3rd grade burns, surgical wounds healing ”per secundam”. Chronic wounds are associated with a long-term healing, high cost and a decrease of the quality of life. That’s why a rational attitude and a search for the most effective therapy of chronic wound together with a complex approach to the patient is necessary.
Healing of chronic wounds runs in three phases which leads to new granulation tissue formation and its reepithelization. Healing process is influenced by various local and systemic factors which should be taken in consideration for the choice of management strategy.
The complex care represents the main principle of the management of various types of wounds, especially chronic one, and encompasses topical, systemic, physical and, possibly, surgical therapy, as well as preventive measures and patient education.
Key words:
chronic wounds – etiology – therapy – prevention
