Overview
The review paper particularly focuses on the methods of preparation and characterization of microparticles as well as the characterization and examples of their possible use in pharmacotherapy. Microparticles as a multiple dosage form usually rank among the medicaments of the second generation, i.e. the medicaments in which controlled release is possible. In comparison with the classic dosage forms they exert lower undesirable effects and higher stability. Administration of medicaments in this dosage form produces higher efficiency of therapy and simultaneously improved compliance of the patient. The most widely used methods of preparation of microparticles include phase separation (simple or complex), evaporation of the solvent, spray drying, and cross-linking methods based on the formation of covalent or ionic bonds. Marginally, it is possible to use the extrusion-spheronization methods, formation and coating of microparticles in the fluid layer, and in situ polymerization.
Key words:
microparticles – preparation of microparticles – polymers – controlled release
