Overview
Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) is a complication affecting one in five patients after a spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury. It leads to severe pain, loss of range of motion, as the joint gradually becomes ankylosed, leading to greater functional disability. The etiopathogenesis and risk factors of NHO remain poorly understood. The aim of this review was to focus on advances in the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of NHO, and possible options for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of NHO.
