Overview
Cardiac arrhythmias are a heterogeneous group of disorders which are common in every age group. The clinical importance depends on the specific type of arrhythmia – from benign forms (a majority of supraventricular tachycardias) to ventricular arrhythmias with a risk of a sudden cardiac death. Rather than a long-term antiarrhythmic prophylaxis, a cardiac electrophysiological examination with endo and/or epicardial catheter ablation is a modern, and in many cases a causal therapy for heart rhythm disorders. Implantation of a cardiac pacemaker or cardioverter-defibrillator is indicated in some selected groups of patients in primary or secondary prevention.
Key words:
arrhythmia – tachycardia – bradycardia – supraventricular tachycardia – ventricular arrhythmias – ventricular fibrillation – sudden cardiac death – cardioverter-defibrillator – catheter ablation – pharmacotherapy – guidelines
