Central and peripheral blo od pressure and their control by tre atment

Overview

Blo od pressure (BP) me asured the normal way from the brachi al artery differs from central BP in the aorta due to different characteristics of the blo od vessel wall and the size of the reflected pressure wave. Central BP can be estimated non‑invasively using pulse wave analysis. Central BP is a better predictor of cardi ovascular events than peripheral BP, especi ally in pati ents with renal insuffici ency, advanced coronary atherosclerosis etc. Different antihypertensive drugs have different effects: beta blockers have less influence on central BP than on peripheral BP, while the influence of ACE inhibitors and probably also sartans on central Bp is gre ater. Central BP is the potenti al future therape utic objective.

Key words:
central blo od pressure –  vascular rigidity –  reflected pressure wave –  pulse wave analysis –  antihypertensive tre atment
