Influence of Elastic Tape to Range of Motion During the Trunk Flexion

Overview

The authors set themselves a task to evaluate the influence of elastic tape (kinesio tape effect) applied on the paravertebral muscles of lumbar spine on the extent of mass movements during trunk flexion. Moreover, we compared this effect with the influence of another elastic material applied in the same way. In randomly selected sample of 50 healthy probands at the age of 18-20 years the elastic tape (kinesio tape) was applied on paravertebral muscles of lumbar spine and the extent of movements in forward bend was evaluated by means of the Thomayer and Schober probe before and after the application. The same procedure was performed in a control group, where another elastic material (fixomull) was applied.

The results indicated that the application of elastic tape (kinesio tape) exerts a statistically significant effect on the increase of the extent of movements into flexion of the trunk with the mean value of 2.24 cm (t(24) = 2.86, p <0.05) in a total range and 0.51 cm (t(24) = 0.67, p <0.05) for the local effect in the area of the applied tape. The effect of the different elastic material (fixomull) increased extend of movements was neither confirmed nor excluded..
