Overview

A “Quitline” is an important part of the spectrum of services provided to help treat tobacco dependence. The Czech Quitline was set up on January the 1st, 2005, and is operated daily between 12pm and 8pm. It is run by specially trained medical students from all three Prague medical schools. Between January 1st, 2005, and June, 30th, 2007 the Quitline answered nearly 4500 calls and about 1000 email queries concerning smoking. Of the callers, 66 % were smokers, 97 % of whom were nicotine dependent (lighting up the first cigarette of the day within one hour of waking).

Key words:
tobacco dependence, smoking cessation, quitline.
