The authors present the definition of osteoporosis and the main diagnostic examinations. They emphasize the importance of biochemical tests, in particular urinary pyridinolines for following up the intensity of osseous collagen breakdown. They discuss the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in particular with calcitonin and emphasize the importance of repeated examinations of urinary pyridinolines.
