Overview

Czech children and adolescents are as regards alcohol and other addictive substances at great risk. Dependence is only one of the many health problems caused by addictive substances. The risks include injuries, intoxications, suicides or murder, traffic accidents etc. Parents of children who have problems with addictive substances frequently address the general practitioner. In the present paper the author discusses how to diagnose the child's addiction and how to evaluate it. The author mentions brief intervention, legal issues and frequent complications in families with a dependent child such as pseudoindividuation, transgression of generational borderlines, hiding the problem and the feeling of stigmatization, alcohol dependence of the parents or violence used against the child. The author deals briefly also with detoxification in out-patient services. It is important to collaborate with parents of problem children even if the adult child refuses treatment.

Key words:
addictive substances - brief intervention - family.
