Overview

The prevalence of thyroid diseases in patients with diabetes mellitus is approximately 10- 15% (in non-diabetic population is about 6 %). The relationship between diabetes mellitus type 2 and thyreopathies is complex and not completely researched at present time. Autoimmune thyropathies are frequent in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. At present there are some studies demonstrating higher prevalence of autoimmune thyreopathies also in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Chronic autoimmune thyroiditis is the most frequent form of autoimmune thyropathies also in patients with diabetes mellitus. Clinical relevance ot thyroid diseases in patients with DM significantly increases if the thyroid diseases are associated with deteriorated function. Subclinical thyroid dysfunctions are frequent in patients with diabetes mellitus, where belong subclinical hypothyreosis and subclinical hyperthyreosis. Subclinical thyroid dysfunctions in diabetics can lead to higher fluctuations of glycaemias and to deterioration of compensation of diabetes mellitus.

Key words:
diabetes mellitus – mutual relationship – thyreopathies
