Overview

A hypertensive crisis is defined as a critical elevation in blood pressure and the presence of symptomatic organ damage. It includes either hypertensive emergencies with the presence of acute or ongoing end-organ damage or more common hypertensive urgencies without accompanying end-organ damage. Hypertensive crisis is rare in children. It always represents a serious situation, which requires immediate hospital admission, appropriate antihypertensive therapy and monitoring of the child. The cause of hypertensive crisis should be also investigated.
