Overview

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very common disease involving many risks for patients and it has a substantial influence on mortality and morbidity. Neurologists, pneumologists and cardiologists, as well as internists, all cooperate on the diagnosis and therapy of this disease. The aim of this paper is to summarize recent information about the most severe cardiovascular complications of OSA and to emphasise the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. The following primary targets for such cooperation include: cost-benefit analysis in the specification of a strategy for patient evaluation; a comprehensive approach to patient treatment with the focus on the influence of all the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases; the realization of randomized trials in which the connection between OSA and cardiovascular diseases is evaluated; and, last but not least, the creation of algorithms of treatment that might improve patient compliance and the outcomes of treatment.

Key words:
obstructive sleep apnea – cardiovascular complication – continual positive airway pressure treatment – multidisciplinary cooperation
