INFOGRAPHIC: Determining the Target Intraocular Pressure in Glaucoma Therapy
The goal of glaucoma treatment is to preserve the visual field and the quality of life of patients. Currently, the only approach to preserving the visual field of patients is to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP). Its target value should be determined for each patient with consideration of individual risk factors. The following comprehensive infographic shows which factors should be considered according to the current recommendations of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS).
How to determine the target IOP value?
The target IOP value can be determined as a specific level or as a percentage reduction compared to the pre-treatment state. It represents the upper limit of IOP that is still compatible with the therapeutic goal for the given patient.
There is not enough evidence available to set a definitive algorithm for determining the optimal target IOP value. Therefore, we establish it for each patient individually, considering risk factors and the rate of disease progression. The target IOP value should be reassessed at regular intervals and whenever the disease progresses or new ocular or systemic comorbidities arise.
