Bronchogenic carcinoma is one of the most frequent neoplastic diseases in males, and thenumber of female patients is rising. The authors discuss possible treatment of advanced lungcancer, stage IIIA according to the TNM classification. They define first the assessment of thisadvanced stage of the disease according to the TNM system. Then the article is divided into twoparts, treatment of small-cell lung cancer and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer and thecommon approach to treatment is emphasised. At the same time the authors discuss in detailthe possibilities of combined therapy: chemotherapy and actinotherapy in small-cell carcinomaand whether it is advisable to combine non-adjuvant induction chemotherapy with subsequentsurgery or actinotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer, depending on the stage of the diseaseand the affection of mediastional nodes. The authors mention also important clinical trials onwhich the above recommendations are based.
