Overview
Advance directives are documents that enable adult, competent patients to formulate their wishes relating to “healthcare” in the future. These documents have appeared in USA since the early 70s of the 20th century, and were introduced in Europe roughly ten years later. The authors provide an overview on the current situation of AD in Europe and offer some thoughts on why many European physicians are less eager to follow the advance directives then their American colleagues.
Key words:
advance directives, living wills, ethics of accountability, ethics of care, accountability.
