Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is currently one of most challenging problems of ophthalmology. Thearticle summarizes the current concepts on DR. The author discuses the pathogenesis and thepathological-anatomic picture and provide DR classification. He points to the importance ofprevention, diabetes control and cooperation of the diabetiologists and ophthalmologists in thetreatment of DR.
