Overview
Obesity is recognized as a chronic, recurrent and progressive metabolic disease with the accumulation of body (visceral, ectopic) fat with a high prevalence worldwide, affecting not only adults, but also children and adolescents. Obesity is insufficiently treated in clinical practice, the reason being that in many countries obesity is not considered as a chronic lifelong disease, thus denying patients the right to real help. Overweight and obesity are not avoided even in Slovakia, and we are among the nations with a high prevalence of obesity. It significantly increases the cardiometabolic load, especially the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension, lipid metabolism disorders, metabolic syndrome, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, specific types of oncological diseases, metabolic associated fatty liver disease, gastroesophageal reflux, osteoarthritis and arthritis, polycystic ovarial syndrome, infertility, depressive syndromes, neurodegenerative diseases, etc. Obesity affects the quality and length of life of people living with obesity. In the complex management of obesity, we are ultimately concerned with the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors, domácardiovascular events, as well as a decrease in both cardiovascular and overall mortality, and an improvement in the quality and length of life. The article evaluates the current situation in the management of individuals with overweight and obesity in Slovakia. We still have a lot of work to do to raise awareness of obesity as a chronic disease with numerous serious complications, among the general public and among health professionals. Our goal is to create awareness of obesity-related issues at the legislative level; prepare suitable conditions for increasing the involvement of medical and non-medical professions in the obesity management process; to evaluate the benefits of all long-term therapeutic strategies for weight loss and maintenance in terms of health risks, quality of life and cost-effectiveness.
