Overview

Vitamin K in neonatology

The crucial role of vitamin K in hemostasis has been known to the professionals for almost a century. The newborn and infant age is a high-risk period of life, due to a reduced intake of vitamin K. It can lead to episodes of life-threatening bleeding. Schemes of prophylactic administration of vitamin K were established in the second half of the twentieth century in order to eliminate vitamin K deficiency bleeding. Significant decline in the incidence of neonatal bleeding manifestations was achieved by implementing these recommendations. The recent prophylactic strategies of vitamin K administration reflect the metabolism specifics for neonates. The favorable situation in the decrease of critical hemorrhages is currently altered by the enhancement of parental refusals of intramuscular prophylaxis.
