News Incidence of Secondary Malignancies in CLL Patients on FCR Regimen in Central Europe

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) represents the most common type of leukemia in Western countries with closely related incidence in Central European states. Since 2000, new therapeutic regimens have been explored and applied in an effort to improve patient prognosis, including the combination of fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab (FCR). However, the development of new therapeutic regimens is also associated with concerns about the risk of secondary malignancies.

News Self-administration of alpha-1-antitrypsin can significantly improve patients' quality of life

Treatment of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) requires lifetime administration of weekly intravenous infusions of this substance, mostly in medical facilities. The possibility of AAT application at home is being discussed. This topic was also addressed at a symposium held during the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress, which took place in November 2019 in Madrid.

News Clinical Characteristics of Trauma Patients Requiring Dosing Adjustments of Enoxaparin in TEN Prevention

Injuries and trauma surgical procedures represent a significant risk factor for the development of thromboembolic disease (TEN). Routine thromboprophylaxis is thus recommended for trauma patients, often in the form of low molecular weight heparins (LMWH), including enoxaparin. A recently published study evaluated factors associated with the need for higher dosing of enoxaparin to achieve effective prophylactic levels.

News ESC 2022: What Current Insights Say About the Role of Dabigatran in Stroke Prevention with Atrial Fibrillation and Comorbidities

The risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) increases with age as risk factors accumulate and comorbidities arise. What do current data from randomized clinical trials and registries show about stroke prevention (SP) in the context of concurrent AF and some other chronic diseases? This was the focus of one of the symposia at this year's European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress.

News Is the efficacy of bisoprolol in secondary prevention of acute myocardial infarction in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention comparable to carvedilol?

Beta-blockers (BB) are recommended for all patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as part of secondary prevention of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The study presented below compared the efficacy of carvedilol – a vasodilating beta-blocker, whose benefit in this indication was confirmed by a randomized clinical trial – with the effect of bisoprolol.

News Genetic Testing in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer - Clinical Practice Experience

Targeted therapy has brought significant improvements to certain groups of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Selecting patients who will benefit from targeted therapy can be performed using molecular profiling with next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques. However, we still lack sufficient data on the feasibility and results of such profiling in real-world clinical practice, which was the focus of an analysis recently published in The Oncologist.

News Colours of Sepsis 2023: Antimicrobial Stewardship is a Necessity. The Spectrum of Effective Antimicrobial Modalities has Expanded to Include Another Combination

Inappropriate antibiotic (ATB) treatment is associated with high mortality, while unrestricted use of broad-spectrum antibiotics drives resistance development. Thus, the decision to deploy antibiotics becomes a choice between the current and future patient. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is an essential strategy in daily operations. Extending the spectrum of antimicrobial agents is equally crucial in combatting resistant bacterial strains. A symposium on this theme was part of the expert program at this year's 'festival of intensive medicine' Colours of Sepsis, held in late January in Ostrava.

News Composition of the Intestinal Microbiota of Patients with IBS May Predetermine the Success of a Diet with Low Fermentable Carbohydrates

Some patients with irritable bowel syndrome may benefit from a diet low in fermentable carbohydrates, but the mechanism of this intervention is not yet satisfactorily explained. A study published in Gut focused on the relationship between the composition of the intestinal microbiota and clinical response to dietary intervention.

News Subcutaneous pdC1-INH in Patients with Hereditary Angioedema in Real-World Practice

Italian authors published a series of cases of patients with hereditary angioedema caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1-INH-HAE) with long-term prophylaxis using human plasma-derived C1 inhibitor concentrate (pdC1-INH) in subcutaneous form. They supplement the results of the placebo-controlled COMPACT study, in which s.c. pdC1-INH reduced the frequency of attacks, with insights from real-world practice in 5 patients treated at the angioedema therapy center in Milan, Italy.

News To what extent does the delay between symptom onset and diagnosis of AATD affect patient survival?

The risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increased, among other things, by a deficiency of alpha-1-antitrypsin (AATD). However, there is often a delay between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis of AATD, which is associated with worse clinical and functional status and a more advanced stage of the disease. The study presented below examined how this fact further affects patient survival.
