Overview
The duplex collecting system pathology is one of the most common congenital malformations of the upper urinary tract. There are two basic options for managing duplex kidney associated with ectopic ureter and ureterocele; heminephrectomy and ureteroureterostomy. Recently, laparoscopic and robotic reconstructive surgery has gained acceptance as a feasible and reliable treatment associated with minimal morbidity in the pediatric population. The feasibility and efficacy of laparoscopic and robotic reconstructive surgery was subsequently evaluated in many institutions, demonstrating comparable results to open surgery. In this review, we provide our technical aspects of laparoscopic and robotic heminephrectomy and ureteroureterectomy for patients with duplex kidney anomalies, and a critical summary of current knowledge on its indications and outcome. In conclusions, laparoscopic and robotic heminephrectomy and ureteroureterostomy for duplex kidney are safe and effective option in the surgical treatment of children with duplex kidney anomaly, although long-term outcome analysis will be needed to establish as a standard surgical treatment.
