Overview

An optimal number of nursing staff, including a corresponding representation of qualifications, is necessary for high quality nursing care. Many variables are involved in the process of quantifying nursing burden. Current activities focus on the creation of complex data related to nursing activities in the individual medical fields. In this research, we assessed objectively the nursing burden and studied the actual number of personnel involved in the care of 3 929 patients in a specialized clinic. The fundamental result of the analysis was the objective assessment of the nursing workload, including the time required for implementing and providing special and basic nursing care; the assessment of the other parameters of the nursing burden and mainly the establishment of optimal staffing in haemato-oncology. The time required for treating 1 patient in 24 hours is up to 250 min. Optimally, one bed would be covered by a nursing work-load of 1.2. The established proportional representation of basic and specialized nursing care of 10.7%: 89.3% can be used to determine the adequate qualification representation of the nursing staff. Although the presented data reflect the specific situation of the given workplace, it is also possible to apply them to other workplaces with the same medical specialization.

Key words:
nursing, haemato-oncology, nursing burden, quality of care, qualification
