Overview
Objective:

Classification of the study:
A retrospective study.
Name and location of the institute:

Methodology:
The study accomplishes a retrospective analysis of the proportion of Ureaplasma infections in 157 female patients with persisting vaginal discharge. Other factors followed in the study were the age of patients and the possibilities and the efficacy of treatment.
Results:
49% of cases of chronic vaginal discharge in women were caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum species. The highest incidence was documented among women 25–30 years old. Doxycycline and Clarithromycin proved to be the 1st choice medicaments during a 10 day treatment scheme of ureaplasmal infection with nearly 95% efficacy.
Conclusion:
Ureaplasma urealyticum is an often neglected cause of chronic vaginal discharge, primarily in young women, although its diagnostics and therapy are simple and considerably successful.
Key words:
chronic vaginal discharge – ureaplasma urealyticum – cultivation – doxycycline – clarithromycin
