Overview
Based on recent advances in diagnostics and treatment of maxillary sinusitis, authors present results of a survey monitoring the common ways the Czech otorhinolaryngologists deal with maxillary sinusitis.
The survey questionnaire used contained 15 questions looking at ENT surgeons characteristics (age, gender, size and type of workplace, length of ENT praxis); diagnostics and therapy of acute maxillary sinusitis; indications, technique, and numbers of antral washout. The last question asked about examination of olfactory functions among ENT surgeons. Most questions were closed ended types, i.e. respondents were provided number of options (and could volunteer and put down an option not on the list.
The response rate was 19.7 %, i.e. 100 responses out of 508 letters sent out.
The results clearly show significant effect of length of praxis in the specialty and of the type of workplace on the methods used. The ambulatory ENT specialists prefer non-invasive diagnostic methods, e.g. paranasal sinus ultrasound or diaphanoscopy. Similarly, colleagues with praxis longer than 30 years less likely have a rhino endoscope available in their office. Contrarily, they more often refer patients with suspected maxillary sinusitis to paranasal sinus x-ray, and perform antral washout in both acute and chronic sinusitis. It seems that conclusions of recently published evidence based studies alter daily clinical routines of ENT specialists in the Czech Republic in diagnostics and treatment of maxillary sinusitis only very slowly.
