Overview
The paper provides a practice-oriented overview of the main issues in geriatric medicine, including demographic analyses, description of the frailty syndrome and an emphasis on geriatric syndromes. Considering the trend towards aging population and its demographic prognosis, it is vital that all physicians (especially in the field of internal medicine) assume the basic knowledge of geriatric medicine and understand polymorbidity, frailty and geriatric syndromes, including their interrelationships and functional associations. A comprehensive treatment of any disease in advanced age (including geriatric syndromes and frailty) should be aimed at a causing disorder as well as it should improve and maintain self-sufficiency and retain intellectual functions and functional social relationships within the family and community.
Key words:
older age – demography – geriatric assessment (CGA) – frailty – geriatric syndromes
