Overview
Anemia in the elderly is common and is usually mild and in most cases > 100 g /l. However, it is not only associated with higher morbidity and even mortality. The prevalence of new anemia increases compared to 65–69–year–old (3–4 %) of people for the 85th year at the age of two to three times. If it is determined microcytic anemia, you need to carefully search for a possible source of bleeding.
The authors point to the complexity and interconnectedness of some events in the development of microcytic anemia in some aspects, risks and pitfalls microcytic anemia and its relationship with anemia of chronic disease. They also indicate the general characteristics of the anemia, the prevalence of iron metabolism in relation to erythropoiesis, including clinical and laboratory typing, diagnosis and treatment of seniors.
