Overview
The day-care of relations with dementia presents a marked psychological, physical and social stress on the family, which may lead to health problems. The GP is usually first to examine and diagnose these problems, and so it is essential that GPs are aware of the nature of these stresses. The unique standing of a GP as the family doctor enables them to systematically work to stabilise and improve the condition of the patient with dementia as well as to improve the quality of life for the family caregiver.
Key words:
Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, family caregiver, quality of life.
