Overview
The role of general practitioners in the prevention of tobacco related emergencies is crucial. Most health problems caused by tobacco smoking occur after some latency, but tobacco related emergencies are also common. Injuries and burns, sudden health crises, interaction with various drugs, and emotional problems during withdrawal are mentioned. We review some methods for the treatment of tobacco dependence. Motivation enhancement, counselling, supportive psychotherapy, life-style adjustment, elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy (varenicline, bupropion, nicotine replacement therapy) can be used. We also present self-help instructions for patients.
Key words:
tobacco dependence, emergency, withdrawal, brief intervention, treatment, general practitioners.
