Overview
The basic physiological functions of the endothelium are functions of a semipermeable membrane, control of optimal vascular patency and safeguarding of vascular integrity. Endothelialdysfunction may be considered the first functionally important stage of organic stenotic(obstructive, obliterating, occlusive) diseases of the arterial system which have one maincommon consequence - ischaemia. They represent the basic etiopathogenic condition of thedevelopment of angio-organic ischaemic syndromes („ischaemic diseases“).Ways of detection ofendothelial dysfunction include laboratory methods and angiologic noninvasive and invasivediagnostic methods. Prevention and treatment of endothelial dysfunction is based on eliminationof the basic vascular risk factors.
Key words:
endothelium - endothelial dysfunction - diagnosis - prevention - treatment.
