Acute and chronic low back pain are described from the point of view of etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, differential diagnosis and therapy. Description of individual entities is based on clinical as well as literary knowledge of the authors. Both subjective and objective signs and symptoms are reviewed in detail together with the rational indication for the use of imaging techniques. MRI and CT images illustrate the important entities mentioned in the article.
