Overview
The use of drugs in top class and recreational sports is described as doping. An important partis played in particular by anabolic steroids. Conclusions focused on their use by men and womenprovide evidence that anabolic steroids probably cause an increase of muscular volume but thedevelopment of strength must be supplemented by regular exercise. Long-term side-effects ofsteroids are disastrous. In particular the risk of death as a result of cardiovascular disease, infertility in men, masculinization and possible foetal damage in women are the major risks.More recent investigations indicate that during long-term abuse of anabolic steroids mentalchanges and behavioural disorders may develop. In the Czech Republic data were assembledon the increasing abuse of steroids for cosmetic reasons.
