Overview
The paper deals with the psychological aspects of short-term foster care. It points at the numerous drawbacks of this form of foster care, especially in the context of children’s psychic needs, but it also suggests how it can potentially be used.
The article is based on a detailed study of specialised literature and is supported by an extensive research of 50 adults who have grown up in long-term foster care. In this research we were investigating how people brought up in foster families perceive the significance of both their biological and foster families, their personal experience with the two (or sometimes more) families, whether and how they kept in touch with the biological parents, the characteristics of their process of coping with their non-standard personal histories. The research output has convincingly shown that the permanent nature of the environment and belonging to the family are extremely significant in the eyes of formerly fostered children. These days, however, the stability of placing the child is – due to the promotion and realisation of short-term foster care – often underestimated and so is the closely related child’s need to belong to the family permanently. The research findings, data from specialised literature and facts from practical experience show the great importance of caution and a very sensitive, individualistic approach when applying the short-term foster care.
