Overview

Palliative care in the neonatal period represents a specific component of pediatric palliative care. In accordance with internationally accepted standards and the World Health Organization's recommendations, it should be provided from the diagnosis onwards, even during ongoing treatment with a curative intent. In the Czech Republic, pediatric palliative medicine, as well as perinatal palliative care, has undergone rapid development in recent years, with an increasing number of facilities offering specialized palliative care within hospital settings through consultative teams. This article introduces the basic principles of perinatal palliative care, reflects on the specifics of palliative care for severely ill newborns, and the current situation in the Czech Republic. Finally, experiences from providing perinatal palliative care at the Motol University Hospital in Prague are presented.
