Overview

The term pericarditis denotes inflammatory pericardial diseases of both infectious and non-infectious etiology. Usually it is a relatively non-serious disease where the significance lies primarily in differential diagnosis. However, it may involve potentially life-threatening complications, whether acute (tamponade) or in the long-term (constrictive pericarditis). Therefore, proper diagnosis and treatment of these diseases is very important.
