Overview

Calcaneus is one of the most complex bones of the body, according to its morphology. Exact anatomic restoration of its shape and surrounding joints alignment is the difficult issue and malalingment can cause permanent disability with significant limitations in everyday life and work. Appropriate surgical method is still the matter of discussion. Proponents of MIOS argue for the lower incidence of wound healing complications and the possibility of using this approach in the critical conditions of soft tissues The priority of ORIF supporting teams is an open reduction and stable fixation allowing early mobilisation of the patient.

The authors theoretically elaborated methodology of an open surgical approaches, surgical indications and timing.

ORIF is the method of choice in depression type dislocated intraarticular fractures Sanders II and in all Sanders III type fractures.

KEY WORDS:
ORIF - open reduction and internal fixation, surgical approaches
