Overview
Objectives:
The objective of the study was to establish the correlation between the development of the internal genital organs assessed by ultrasound and the parameters of physical development during sexual maturation.
Subjects and methods:
103 girls from the region of Bratislava aged between 7 and 17 years, without endocrine or morphologic pathology of the internal genital organs, were examined by the status quo method. Measurements of their height and weight were taken and their BMI was calculated. Breast and pubic hair development was assessed using Tanner classification. The age of onset of menarche was established using a questionnaire. Abdominal ultrasound examinations were performed with a full bladder after increased oral ingestion of fluids.
Outcome:
Based on the results of the measurements, tables and graphs for the size of the internal genital organs could be drawn (the length, anterior-posterior diameter and volume of the uterus, the length of corpus to length of cervix ratio and the average ovarian volume) in girls aged between 7 and 16 for the different age categories and phases of sexual maturation.
Conclusion:
The length of the uterus and the volume of the ovaries correlate with age. Uterine volume is more dependent on sexual maturation. After the onset of menarche, the size of the uterus does not correlate with any of the factors studied.
Key words:
internal genitalia – ultrasound – sexual maturation
