Overview
Epiglottitis is an acute inflammation of the supraglottic region of the larynx. In severe cases it can be life threatening. The most common cause is bacterial infection.14 patients with an acute epiglottitis were hospitalized at the 1st ENT Department of University Hospital in Bratislava from 2003 to 2009. We evaluated antibiotics used prior to hospitalization as well as clinical signs like a fever, general fatigue, deglutination problems and dyspnea. We assessed the changes in the laboratory parameters. We evaluated the presence of the epiglottic abscess as a key sign of the severity of the disease. We evaluated the need for orotracheal intubation, coniotomy and tracheostomy. All of our patients were treated with antibiotics and corticosteroids. Three patients had their airways secured with a tracheostomy. Patients with acute epiglottitis need care at an intensive care unit. This is essential because an ICU has the ability to secure airways if necessary. Strict observation is necessary until recovery. With optimal management of the disease, the prognosis for full recovery is good.
